Research Associate

Universität Hamburg invites applications for a Research Associate for the project “Hamburg Numeracy Project (Alltagsmathematik als Teil der Grundbildung Erwachsener)” in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg Higher Education Act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG).

It is remunerated at the salary level TV-L 13 and calls for 100 % of standard work hours per week. [1]

The fixed-term nature of this contract is based upon Section 2 of the Academic Fixed-Term Labour Contract Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG). The term is fixed for a period of 31 months.

Responsibilities

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates can also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Specific duties

Under the direct supervision of the Chief Programme Coordinator of UIL and the overall supervision of the UIL Director, and working with programme specialists and other experts in the UIL team, the successful candidate will contribute to the Institute’s work in adult literacy and numeracy assessment, with a focus on low- and low/middle-income countries.

As part of this work, the candidate will, among others, contribute to the analysis of current global, regional and national literacy and numeracy assessments; to reflections on contextualisation and comparability of measurement across countries; and to the work on the definition of proficiency levels for literacy and numeracy.

The incumbent will also provide advice for the development of survey design and contribute to the analysis of literacy and numeracy data of selected countries and their interpretation, and conduct other statistical analyses when requested. Furthermore, support and advice on reporting and communication should be provided. The candidate is also expected to produce publications and disseminate results. The position has no teaching obligations.

Requirements

  • A university degree in a relevant field, such as educational evaluation and assessment, psychometrics, statistics, or economics of education.
  • A doctoral degree is welcome but not necessarily required.
  • A minimum of two years' professional experience, preferably in learning measurement or skills assessment, in an international setting.
  • Expert knowledge of quantitative and qualitative analysis software programmes such as SPSS, STATA, R or any other equivalent is essential.
  • Knowledge of recent large-scale assessments such as PIAAC, PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS is highly desired.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent organizational skills with the ability to establish priorities, coordinate and monitor own work plan, and work with an international team.
  • Effective and persuasive communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and good working knowledge of German, French or other international language.
