Have fun learning as a family with UIL’s new online course
The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) has just launched a microlearning course aimed at parents and caregivers called Fun with Family Learning. Online and self-paced, this programme of short modules aims to provide parents and caregivers with support and fun ideas for learning with their children at home.
Parents, caregivers and other family members are central to a child’s early learning and development. Essential foundational skills are acquired through everyday interactions within families and communities. Without these skills, children are more likely to drop out of school and less likely to benefit from further training and skills programmes.
The Tashkent Declaration, the outcome document of last year’s World Conference on Early Childhood Care and Education in Tashkent, Republic of Uzbekistan, highlights the importance of involving parents and caregivers in children’s development and education. Similarly, through its family literacy and learning initiatives, UIL promotes family learning as a holistic approach that contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The UIL microlearning course Fun with Family Learning has been developed with flexibility in mind. The course comprises video, audio and text resources to inspire parents and caregivers to explore a variety of family learning activities, develop literacy and numeracy skills together with their children, and, most importantly, have fun.
Discover how storytelling, counting, writing poems, and learning through dance, games and using digital tools can help to create a rich and engaging learning experience for the whole family while strengthening children’s foundational skills.
Educators who want to explore ideas and concrete strategies to promote learning at home and engage parents and families will also benefit from Fun with Family Learning.

Intergenerational approaches to learning are recognized as an effective means of developing and improving the literacy, numeracy and foundational skills of adults, youth and children. By applying these approaches, family and intergenerational literacy and learning programmes create synergies between early childhood care and education, primary education and adult learning.
