The UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) in partnership with the Lifelong Learning Platform (LLLP) and the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA) will host a regional conference for Europe on 9 October 2023, to discuss the implementation and monitoring of the Marrakech Framework for Action (MFA), adopted at the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII). The framework sets out the roadmap for effective adult learning and education policies and practices over the next decade, with a focus on equity, inclusion and lifelong learning.

The regional conference will bring together stakeholders working in the field of lifelong learning and adult learning and education in Europe to determine the tools and mechanisms necessary for establishing inclusive lifelong learning systems. Participants will analyse gaps, priorities, and needs in reference to the MFA recommendations. They will identify good practices and innovations in adult learning and education and agree on a regional follow-up mechanism to track the progress of MFA implementation.

The meeting is by invitation only.

Background

With the adoption of the Marrakech Framework for Action at the Seventh International Conference on Adult Education on 17 June 2022, representatives of over 140 countries committed to translating the vision of a right to lifelong learning into reality. They undertook to significantly increase adult participation in learning and recognized the need for increased financial investment in adult learning and education. More than 1,000 participants, among them heads of state, education ministers and high-level representatives of the United Nations, attended the conference hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco and UNESCO from 15 to 17 June 2022 in Marrakech.
