Global Alliance for Literacy welcomes Morocco as a new member

Participants of the GAL meeting on 8 September 2022 in Abidjan

On International Literacy Day 2022, the Kingdom of Morocco joined the Global Alliance for Literacy (GAL) as a new member country. At the Alliance’s meeting in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, members welcomed the commitment of Morocco to further advance literacy in the country and to support other GAL members in their efforts towards promoting universal basic literacy.

While expressing his endorsement of Morocco’s membership, H.E. Dr Chakib Benmoussa, the country’s Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports, explained that ‘Morocco has launched a strategy to mobilize all stakeholders involved in combating illiteracy. The country puts an emphasis on opening inclusive learning environments by taking into account the needs of vulnerable populations. Morocco has developed various innovative digital tools for literacy learning as well as a monitoring system for the literacy programmes.’

During the course of the meeting, GAL members also discussed the importance of strengthening the digital competences of literacy educators through a training programme developed as part of a partnership between the UNESCO-led Global Education Coalition and GAL, which is coordinated by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL).

The meeting also saw the launch of From Radio to Artificial Intelligence: Review of Innovative Technology in Literacy and Education for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, which is published by UIL with funding by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and an accompanying compilation of case studies, titled Leveraging Innovative Technology in Literacy and Education Programmes for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.
