Vision

São Paulo’s huge municipal education system, comprising more than 1,500 schools, equips its teachers to provide high-quality education. The city has implemented innovative technical tools to compile, monitor and evaluate a database of educational provisions. The city’s commitment to joining the Global Network of Learning Cities is based on its desire to share its experiences regarding the revitalization and enhancement of its schools and education system.

Policies, plan and implementation

Challenges and goals
As a multicultural city, São Paulo recognizes the ongoing need to expand inclusive learning provisions; increase the use of learning technologies; mobilize further resources; improve living standards; promote stakeholder governance and participation; support the ageing population; and account for demographic changes and urban migration flows.
Regional education system
As well as boosting educational outcomes through the introduction of technical innovations, the city is working to align municipal schools with educational institutions in Latin America, with the objective of building a large-scale evaluation mechanism to assess the performance of the regional education system.
Plan and implementation
The city is also working to: implement the Pedagogic Management System: an online programme that allows around 400,000 students enrolled in basic education to access lesson plans and performance results; and oversee the Municipal School Curriculum Renovation and Authoring Cycle: as well as modifying the curriculum, students aged 13-16 enrolled in basic education are encouraged to work together on a social project in the local neighbourhood.
