UIL co-organizes a conference on Informal Language Learning and Media for Refugees and Migrants in the Nordics

migrants on the move

To raise awareness and promote the exchange of innovative ideas and solutions on informal language learning for migrants and refugees in the Nordic countries, Språkkraft, a Swedish NGO, in collaboration with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL), is organizing a pan-Nordic conference. This conference is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and will take place in the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

Learning the official language of a host country is key to facilitating the integration of migrants and refugees. While many resources have been invested into formal language training in the Nordic countries, there is a need to highlight the value of informal language learning for the integration of migrants and refugees and identify ways in which formal and informal language learning could enrich learners’ experiences.

The conference will bring together experts in the field of informal language learning and representatives from the media, civil society, formal education, and refugees and migrants. With the purpose of highlighting best practices and expanding networks and partnerships within and beyond the Nordic countries, the conference will also emphasize the critical role of the Nordic mass media for promoting language learning as critical part of a democratic society.

More specifically, the following thematic focuses will be on the agenda

  • The importance of language for integration;
  • Public service and other media and migrants – an untapped potential for language learning;
  • Nordic values and integration;
  • The organization of effective language learning for migrants and refugees;
  • Meeting initiatives and language cafés;
  • Synergies between formal education and informal language learning;
  • Technology and informal language learning for migrants and refugees.

The conference will be held in a hybrid format, with possibility of participating in person at the venue or virtually. It will be held in English.

Participation is free but registration is mandatory. Register
