In cooperation with UNESCO Headquarters’ Section of Partnerships, Cooperation and Research, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) will host an international expert meeting on the recognition, validation and accreditation (RVA) of basic youth and adult education. The main objectives of the meeting are to examine the findings of a literature review and discuss the next steps of a research project on the RVA of basic youth and adult education as a foundation for lifelong learning. The meeting will bring together specialists from all world regions who will share policies and practices on developing certification for formally and non-formally acquired learning. Participants will also identify major trends, key issues and challenges with a view to coming up with critical success factors and a set of recommendations for RVA processes.

The outcomes of this meeting, which will be followed by another expert meeting in autumn 2016, will feed into a final research report that UIL will publish next year. This report will provide evidence-based policy recommendations on how youth and adult basic education can be better integrated into national RVA systems. It will also provide guidance on how lifelong learning opportunities for disadvantaged young people and adults can lead to recognized qualifications.
